How to Access 'Okuoikojo Station': The Station on the Lake

The Secret Station Floating on the Lake

Okuoikojo Station is the highlight of the Ikawa Line. Located on a peninsula jutting out into an emerald green lake, it is a rare and breathtaking sight. It has even won a "Cool Japan Award."

1. Access Comparison: Train vs. Car

There are two main ways to get there.

Method Time Feature
Train 60 min Scenic / Few Trains
Car 20 min Efficient / Narrow Road
  • Train (from Senzu): The view from the trolley train is spectacular. However, there are only about 5 trains a day, so planning is essential.
  • Car (from Senzu): You can go directly to the photo spot. However, the road is narrow and winding, so drive carefully.

2. Route Guide for Drivers (Parking to Station)

Park at the "Okuoikojo Station Parking Lot" (free, about 10 spaces) on the opposite shore. From there, it's a bit of an adventure to the station.

Section Time Difficulty
Parking - Viewpoint 2 min Easy
Viewpoint - Station 15 min Hard
  • Parking to Viewpoint: It's very close. This is the famous spot where you can take the photo looking down at the station.
  • Viewpoint to Station: You have to go down steep stairs and cross the iron bridge (walkway). The return trip (climbing up) requires stamina.

⚠️ Clothing Advice The path involves steep stairs and unpaved roads. Heels and sandals are dangerous. Please wear comfortable walking shoes (sneakers).

3. Best Photo Spot

The famous photo of the station floating on the lake is taken from the Rainbow Bridge Viewpoint on the opposite shore, not from the station platform.

  • By Car: The viewpoint entrance is right next to the parking lot.
  • By Train: You need to get off at the station, cross the bridge, and climb up the stairs on the opposite side (30 mins+ round trip).

If you want to take good photos efficiently, accessing by car is advantageous.

Message from the Editor

Walking across the red iron bridge over the lake is a special experience. However, the mountain road to the parking lot is very narrow. Please drive safely and enjoy the superb view.
